Oyo State housing estate abandoned to rodents

It was designed as a modern town for young, upwardly mobile professionals, but all 118 units of flats at Ajoda New Town, Ibadan, are now overgrown with weeds.

Apart from the few local hunters roaming around the place and the construction workers handling renovation work on some of the flats that the owners are planning to move into, the new town is a ghost of itself nine years after it was commissioned.

Flats at the housing estate, which was sold for N1.65 million per flat at the time of the commissioning, now sell for N5.4 million. But none of the buyers have been able to summon the courage to move into the estate.

The acting General Manager of the Oyo State Housing Corporation, Biodun Olojede, however, said it was not correct to say the estate is not occupied by people.

“Let me correct that impression that you have about that place,” he said. “The place is fully occupied, as 117 out of 118 flats at Ajoda have been fully allocated to their buyers and some of them have renovated and are occupying them.”

The beauty of Ajoda could only be appreciated on a closer look, as the entire place has been covered up by the bush. The thick bush makes its presence a bit difficult to notice, more so as there are neither signposts nor road marks to signify its existence.
